On this webpage you will find descriptions of every english course offered at EHS.
The WASL English courses are all designed to help those students who failed the Reading or Writing portions of the WASL to pass it. They focus on the different types of writing and how to use them in an essay as well as reading comprehension. Students must take this class if they have not met the requirements needed to pass the WASL. Students must pass the WASL in order to graduate from EHS. (WASL has been changed to a new test but the new test is similar and still required.)
English 9 is a class for freshman that is designed to teach the students about the different types of writing so that they can use each type whenever it is necessary. This class focuses mainly on how to put together expository and persuasive essays. This class does not focus much on the WASL because the students take the test their sophomore year, but the students do learn what is expected of them when they take the test, and the student is given the option to take the WASL in their freshman year, and if they pass it that year they won’t have to take it their sophomore year.
English 10 Communications is a sophomore class that is focused on important literature and what it means. These classes read short stories and novels and often have to give opinions in class and give some sort of report on what the class has read. This class also focuses on preparing the student for passing the WASL. This class also discusses the different types of writing and helps the student perfect his/her writing skills so that their chances of passing the WASL is greater.
English 11 is a junior class that is focused on American literature. This class reads novels that were written by American authors. Some are about a major event in American history or just a novel that is considered to be of importance to American culture. The novels that are read in this class are usually compared to the movie, which your teacher may also have you watch in class.
English 12 is a Senior class that gives the students the building blocks they need to be able to communicate and express their ideas in a way that will help them be successful after high school. This class reads a lot of novels and is tested on what they learned from them.
CP English is an advanced class. It is a lot like the other classes but the work is a bit more challenging for the students who have excelled in their other english classes. This class often writes a lot of essays and is asked to do reports on the novels that are read in class.
