Ever wonder how students know nearly everything they need to know about their chosen career just a year or two into high school? The staff of the Guidance Office and Career Center give students everything they need to succeed beyond high school. They are the ones who make students’ excellence not only possible, but a very obtainable thing. Without their assistance, students wouldn’t have the opportunity to learn about occupations and career pathways that interest them. The staff truly make students’ high school experience easier.

I’ve taken the liberty of asking some members of the staff a few questions about themselves and the Guidance Office and Career Center.

Cathy Kerr (Second from left)

Career Center Coordinator

What do you do on a daily basis at school?

“I meet with students, coordinate with colleges, parents, and businesses via email, communicate with staff to plan events, keep and arrange records, and post jobs for students.”

What about your job do you enjoy the most?

“Interacting with students and helping them explore post high school options and develop a plan to get there.”

What do you like least about your job?

“I wish the Career Center was in a more visible location. We don’t have as much foot traffic going by.”

How can you help a student who has no idea what career path they want to take?

“I would first have them take an interest assessment, then explore careers to which the computer matched them. They can even research schools that have programs of study to match their interests.”

When are the Guidance Office and Career Center open?

“We’re open 7-3:30; sometimes later if arranged ahead of time.”

Is there a way for students to get help after you’ve closed?

“Students have access to the WOIS program online.”

Stephen P. Edwards (Far right)

Counselor, L-Z

What education do you have that directly pertains to your position?

“Bachelors in History CWU

Counseling Certification CWU

Master Degree, City University

All of the education I’ve received seems to directly pertain to this position.”

What do you do on a daily basis?

“The daily routine in the Guidance Office consists of being prepared to do anything, and respond to everything, while answering questions on, credits, colleges, and careers for parents and staff.

In our ‘down time’ we register new students, track student progress toward graduation, help in developing curriculum, do in-class presentations, meet with students and parents having concerns

and/or problems, do schedule changes, develop Master Schedule for the next year and register students for their classes.”
